This afternoon I went on a jog with my 9 year old son. We jogged my usual route through the local park. At its lowest point the trail winds along a stream to the right and offers extensive views of the Siskiyou Mountains off to the left. At present, the scene is laced with flowers and newly set leaves. As I pointed out flowers to my son I remembered the words of Rachel Carson in her book “The Sense of Wonder”. Near the end of her book she reflects on an experience she had one evening laying out looking up[…]
For the past couple of weeks the pear blossoms around the valley in which we live have been absolutely extraordinary. The area is rich in pear orchards and the sight of tens of thousands of blossoms against the contrast of the green hillsides can be quite a treat. It isn’t that I have some innate fear of corporations or as one author fears that “corporations are gonna get my mama”, but markets are hard enough to understand without the added complexities of such market levers. Add to the complexity,[…]
I published my first and only poem in the sixth grade year book. I still remember writing that poem. I had hopped the barbed wire fence out past our property and was sitting on top of the hill overlooking an old pasture. I started reflecting on the need to embrace simplicity. There I was at twelve years old reflecting on why I ought not get caught up in the hustle and bustle of…. the sixth grade? I was an unusual child. Well, a couple of decades have gone by, I still find myself reflecting on simplicity, and life has, well,[…]
